What is IP Geolocation?

IP geolocation is the process of estimating the geographic location of an active internet connection device using its IP address. When devices connect to the web, they are assigned a unique numeric identifier. Companies compile databases linking these numbers to physical countries, regions, and cities.

Differences Between IPv4 and IPv6

IPv4 addresses use a 32-bit format represented as four groups of numbers (e.g. 192.168.1.1). Due to the exponential growth of connected devices, the global pool of IPv4 addresses is fully depleted. IPv6 was introduced to solve this. It uses 128-bit hexadecimal strings (e.g. 2001:db8::ff00:42:8329), creating an almost infinite number of possible unique addresses.

Is it Safe to Lookup IPs?

Yes. Looking up public IP addresses is safe and standard practice. Public IPs are exposed to every single website you visit. Our lookup tool only accesses general geographic routing indices. It cannot retrieve private details like your computer files, system files, browser history, or exact apartment number.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does the IP Lookup tool locate me?

Internet Service Providers route traffic through regional servers. Our tool calls free IP database APIs to check this routing path, mapping the target IP to its estimated city and country coordinates.

Why does my location look slightly incorrect?

IP geolocation points to the location of your ISP's routing hub, not your exact physical address. This maintains user privacy while providing region-level diagnostics.

Can I query IPv6 addresses?

Yes. The tool fully supports both older IPv4 formats (e.g. 8.8.8.8) and newer, longer IPv6 strings (e.g. 2001:4860:4860::8888).
